The 2027 deadline

Is your home ready for the new rules?

Queensland's smoke alarm laws already apply to homes being rented out or sold. From 1 January 2027 they apply to all homes, including owner-occupied houses, townhouses and units.

Under the rules, your smoke alarms must be:

  • Photoelectric, and compliant with AS 3786-2014
  • Interconnected, so when one goes off they all go off
  • In every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level
  • Less than 10 years old
  • Hardwired to mains power, or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery

You probably need an upgrade if

  • Your alarms aren't interconnected
  • You have ionisation alarms rather than photoelectric
  • There's no alarm in each bedroom
  • Your alarms are more than 10 years old
  • Alarms chirp, false-alarm, or don't sound when tested
  • You're selling or renting out the property
  • You're not sure what you've got

Questions

Smoke alarm questions

Do the new rules apply to my home?

Yes, if you live in Queensland. Rentals and homes being sold already have to comply. From 1 January 2027, every existing house, townhouse and unit must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms.

Can I keep my old hardwired alarms?

Only if they're photoelectric, interconnected, compliant with AS 3786-2014 and under 10 years old. Under Queensland's rules, a hardwired alarm that needs replacing must be replaced with a hardwired alarm, and that has to be done by a licensed electrician.

Hardwired or battery alarms, which is better?

Both are allowed, and we install both. Hardwired alarms run off mains power with a backup battery. Ten-year lithium battery alarms can be linked wirelessly, which suits homes where running new cables is hard. We'll look at your home and recommend what suits it.

Where do the alarms need to go?

In every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level. If a level has no bedrooms, the alarm goes in the most likely path out of the home.

How do I look after my smoke alarms?

Press the test button regularly and gently vacuum or dust them. Never remove the battery or disconnect an alarm to stop it going off. Replace alarms 10 years from the date of manufacture printed on them.
